Heritage
Heritage is our forte.
We are proud of our success in working with so many special historic structures and steering these challenging planning-sensitive projects through the intricate system of statutory approvals.
Our background includes new build and refurbishment schemes associated with grade II, grade II* and grade I listed buildings. We have worked within Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Scheduled Monuments. Our experience includes schemes to establish new uses for historic country houses, new facilities supporting cottage-scale technology companies within a former country estate, proposals to remodel a grade I listed town hall, and a collaboration that secured planning permission to install a skywalk across the listed Tees Transporter Bridge, one of only three remaining in continuous use in the world. Other completed works include a number of contemporary extensions and new build domestic properties adjacent to listed farmhouses, works to a listed lighthouse, a new seminary for an Oxford college and a museum for the end of the Roman Wall.
Our approach is design-led and analytical. We favour modern, contemporary solutions, where suitable, that make a positive and distinctive contribution, but remain contextual and responsive to their setting. We have won a number of awards for such work.
We encourage collaborative relationships with the statutory agencies such as the Local Planning Authorities and Historic England, whom we regard as valuable members of the design team. Over the years we have developed good working relationships and an understanding of the common critical issues and sensitivities.
