About

Graham McGinty, Architect

Graham has more than 20 years experience as a qualified architect in both the public and private sectors.  Having practiced as a Senior Architect for over a decade with one of Newcastle’s most highly regarded design-led firms, Bill Hopper Design, which eventually merged to become Hopper Howe Sadler, he went on to set up preFab in 2012.

His portfolio consists of a wide variety of projects which range from small domestic extensions to large Grade A offices. It includes bespoke contemporary houses, high quality shop refurbishments, leisure facilities, office and retail interiors, first-class student accommodation, and a museum and visitor centre.  He has consulted with luminaries such as Sir Philip Powell and more recently collaborated with the much acclaimed Niall McLaughlin Architects on a joint project to provide extensive new facilities for a grade II* Oxford University Seminary, including a convent for two orders of nuns and new flexible teaching spaces and residential accommodation.

He has a proven track record working with difficult and sensitive sites, often adjacent to historically important buildings including works by G.E. Street, Norman Shaw, John Gibson, Sir Richard Sheppherd and Hidalgo Moya.  He is familiar with all stages of the procurement process, from inception and feasibility, through design development and detailing, to job running and contract administration.

His philosophy is that good architecture is born from three key elements:  an approachable and hands-on relationship with the client; a sensitive understanding of the parameters and potential of the site and brief, expertly directed by specialists and consultants in equal partnership; and finally, a response that is sympathetic, thoughtful and honestly expressed using contemporary materials and techniques.
